LES SOURCES DE CAUDALIE

Travelling and food go hand in hand. A culinary memory will probably also sneak in if you think back to some of your greatest vacation memories. Maybe the simple lovely evening in a small local restaurant in Italy, the chilly coconut and watermelon on the beach, or maybe the sublime Michelin dinner where all elements were in a symphony, and you could hear the birds singing. The main inspiration for the luxurious boutique hotel Les Sources de Caudalie is the so-called “French Paradox”. More precisely the expression refers to research, that shows that the diet and lifestyle in the South of France, suggest being good for your health. It’s difficult not to agree with the fact that incredible red wine, the highest quality olive oil, and great produce must be good for both the body and mind, right?

CHRISTOFER’S REVIEW:

“Must visit for foodies and wine lovers. Although it’s a boutique hotel, it still has a charming bistro and a 2-starred Michelin restaurant. The hotel is ideal for a seamless weekend getaway. Although the Bordeaux area is mostly known for its red wines, a glass of their fantastic barrel-aged Sauvignon Blanc is well deserved – preferably from the year 2010.”

ART DE VIVRE

The wonderful Les Sources de Caudalie is located amongst the famous sun-drenched vineyards of Château Smith Haut Lafitte. Here you are close to the city of Bordeaux, in the lovely French subregion Graves. A wine mecca, that’s known for excelling in red, dry white, and sweet white wines. Château Smith Haut Lafitte’s history goes back 800 years, whilst the hotel was built in 1999. The ambitious couple Alice and Jérôme Tourbie have been at the helm for the last ten years, and the prices have come in a steady stream. In Les Sources de Caudalie, you’ll be lulled into a world of well-being, great flavor, and sky-high service in the best rustic French style.

RUSTIC CHARM

The Boutique hotel is surrounded by blooming nature, and the 8 buildings, which house 61 unique suites and rooms, are inspired by the traditional villages in the Aquitaine region, the Atlantic Ocean, famous vineyards, and the local craftsmanship in the area. The architect Yves Collet chose to use recycled local materials and drew the buildings in coherence with the surroundings, and the décor is decadent and stylish. Expect beautiful plank flooring, elegant textiles, rustic details, and high comfort. The harmony with nature is generally paramount, and when you open the windows, the smells and sounds flow in.

TOUR DE BOURDEAUX

The spa in Les Sources de Caudalie has been recognized as one of the world’s best multiple times – the exclusive and beneficial treatments combine water from warm sources, which are rich in minerals and oligo-elements, with modern research and the nurturing effects from the grapes. Order a half-day treatment and step into the zen zone.

There are many small cozy trips to embark on, either on foot, on a bicycle, or in a car. The area is laced with world-class vineyards in Graves, and the neighboring districts like Médoc, Sauternes, Pomerol, and Saint-Emilion. The Christmas market in Bordeaux in December is magical, and in the summer, you can cruise on a boat in Bassin d’Arcachon with a chilled enjoyable wine and eat oysters and seafood in bunches.

GOURMET TRIP

The gardens swell with homegrown greens and fruits, that are conjured in the two restaurants. Pesticides are an absolute no-go, and with ecological and sustainable principles – the goods are nurtured and grown in the finest surroundings. The chef cook Nicolas Masse is a dedicated ingredient geek, and combined with creativity, a good relationship with the local producers, ambition, a steady hand, and an impressive wine cellar he has secured two Michelin stars at the spearhead of the site, La Grand’Vigne. The old orangery exudes atmosphere, and you shall do nothing but be seduced. In the charming La Table du Lavoir the turning point is “terroir”, and the menus, which are printed on the original washboards, talk about a bistro with regional delicacies galore. ROUGE is the place’s sublime wine bar, and the French Paradox Bar, offers more wine, Armagnac, whiskey, and cognac. On two Saturdays every month, there’s an opportunity to learn from the master chef in the intimate cooking classes, and there is naturally also an opportunity for wine tasting with the talented head sommelier.
